About this deal

With any autobiographical tale from a seemingly pseudonymous author, the question arises: is any of this actually real? Literary hoaxes are not an uncommon occurrence in the realm of memoir and in internetland we now have the act of catfishing too.

But Eliska is given a way out after her mother scrapes together the money to smuggle her out of the country to a new life. Arriving in England in a washing-machine box, she thinks she has made it. But as a young girl alone in a new country, Eliska soon sees her dream turn into a nightmare when she is forced to live and work under unbearable abuse as she tries to forge her way alone. písania mi neskutočne sadol. Hoci sem tam skončila v deji do minulosti, vždy to malo logiku a dokázala vo mne vyvolat rôzne emócie. Every accomplishment and achievement Eliska was able to achieve is something to be proud of because despite the horrors she suffered, she worked hard to earn her degree and to learn to live a better life.

My mother’s side of the family are Romani. Gypsies. No baby-snatching and tambourines, just resilient souls and richly coloured skin. I look most like them, with my brown eyes and scars. I don’t have the richly coloured skin, though. Instead of deep bronze or golden ochre, I came out the colour of sunflower oil and, thanks to childhood malnutrition followed by years of low iron levels, I’m now the shade of an off-brand Simpson.’ That this young woman, who didn't learn to read and write until she was in her teens, was able to write this book is a testament to her determination in the face of desperation.

The book stumbles in the second half, as this characterisation falters. This is possibly due to the events occurring, as the surrounding cast seems far more two-dimensional then the fully-fledged characters of the earlier chapters. Her story is inspiring because it is one of persistence. What’s more, she recognizes her way to a better life is by learning. Learning and proving she is more than so many people would have her be. That was a feeling I could relate to. I don’t mean to suggest people think little of me or that my life is the same as hers, but my love of learning is, in a way, me trying to move up the societal ladder. I really connected to and enjoyed that aspect of the story. I recommend this memoir. Aby tam zažila detskú prácu a násilie si ju našlo vtedy, keď to vôbec nečakala. Her story is inspiring because it is one of persistence. What’s more, she recognizes her way to a better life is by learning. Learning and proving she is more than so many peop Uf, tak tohle bylo silné a nepředstavitelné čtení. Desperate to make her own way in the world, Eliska sets in motion a chain of events that will lead her to England, to school, and to within inches of her dreams.

I was granted an e-ARC of The Girl From Nowhere by Eliska Tanszer by the publisher Mirror Books on NetGalley to provide a fair and honest review. Eliska's story is an extraordinary and powerful read. It's the ultimate book about survival and an against-all-odds fight to make it in life. Highly recommend.'
