About this deal

Your guinea pig’s food needs to be stored properly so it stays fresh and retains the nutrients that are so good for them. They must be kept free of any moulds or fungus. The dry pellet food should supplement a guinea pig’s daily diet which should consist of good quality feeding hay, a cup of safe veggies and a daily portion of nuggets. How to introduce a new pellet food to your guinea pigs It includes 16% protein, which is slightly on the low side, but 15% fibre, which is at the top end of the recommended level. Fibre is not only good for gut health and to maintain a healthy digestive system, but it also helps your guinea pig feel fuller for longer, which means that it is ideal for those that will eat and eat. The food has been fortified with vitamin C and contains healthy amounts. Like humans, guinea pigs do not make their own vitamin C, which means that it must come from their diet and is one of the nutritional reasons that we feed vegetables and leafy greens. Alfalfa (also called Lucerne) is an excellent source of calcium for young guinea pigs as well as pregnant and nursing mothers but once a young guinea pig is past 6 months old, they don’t need it and should change to a Timothy hay based pellet food.

Although many commercial guinea pig foods do include grain, processed grains are difficult for guinea pigs to digest, which means that they can cause gastrointestinal upset and may prevent your cavie from getting its nutritional requirements from the food it eats. Our complementary guinea pig feed is designed to be fed alongside a diet that is up to 85% hay or fresh grass. It contains extra vitamin C, essential to keep your guinea pig healthy, and linseed to help promote a healthy skin and coat. High quality ingredients are combined into a single nugget formula to avoid selective feeding and promote a balanced diet.

They are small, don’t need regular walking, and they tend to tolerate or enjoy being held. They do have very specific dietary requirements, however, that consist of feeding a combination of hay, pelleted food, and fresh vegetables and while it might seem like a lot of work, especially compared to pets like dogs and cats that can get all of their dietary requirements from a single type of food, it is important that you meet their daily nutritional needs. If your pet isn’t finishing their food, then you could be giving them too much or they might just not like it. It’s worth trying a bit less food or a different type of food to see how they get on. If they leave food, make sure to remove it after a couple of hours so they don’t consume rotten or off food. If they’re leaving a lot of food and the changes don’t work, then make sure to call your vet, as there could be something more serious going on. How do I introduce new food into my guinea pig’s diet?
