About this deal

SCIENCE: Are you in an area where you can go look for arrowheads? The best time is in the spring near the rivers after the winter flooding has receded. Also, newly plowed fields can be good places to look if you know some have been found there before. Note: Publishers, authors, and service providers never pay to be reviewed. They do provide free review copies or online access to programs for review purposes. Told in the straightforward, engaging style that has become Susan Wise Bauer’s trademark, The Story of the World covers the sweep of human history from ancient times until the present. Africa, China, Europe, the Americas–find out what happened around the world in the centuries before our own. This read-aloud series is designed for parents to share with elementary-school children, or for older readers to enjoy alone. Introduce your child to the marvelous story of the world’s civilizations! SCIENCE: Build a small terraced garden- maybe with herbs…. Chapter 18: Life in Early Crete (2200-1450bce) While perhaps not strictly necessary, parents interested in making full use of The Story of The World as a history curriculum would be best served by including at least some of its suggested readings.

ART: Learn about Olmec Seated Figure with these activities: Animals and Alter Egos, Communicating With Body Language, Learning About Mesoamerica, Smooth and Polished Each Activity Book lesson cross-references select readings from these reference books that allow students to dive into their history topics a little further, providing them with more specific information and dates. Overall, we believe that The Story of the World can be a very valuable resource for homeschooling families. MATH: Roll up a sheet of paper and secure with tape. Balance a book on top of the column. Will it hold the book? Add another book. Add another. How many books will the column hold? Make 4 columns and see how many books 4 (one in each corner) will hold. Parents then write down the child’s narration and then keep it as part of a journal of their learning. As with the narration exercises, parents are given sample responses to compare these to, which can be quite helpful. Additional History Readings and Corresponding Literature Rather than just being a textbook filled with dry facts, The Story of the World teaches history through a story-like narrative that is far more interesting to read and that brings history to life, creating a far more engaging and meaningful learning experience for students Covers a broad range of cultures Parents can select the activities that best fit their homeschooling style and philosophy, choose which books (if any) to use alongside it and even add in their own supplements if they so choose. Books Are Available in Audiobook Format Rather than restate key information orally, in these written exercises, students instead write brief outlines of the chapter.

It’s very adaptable and doesn’t have a set pacing guide. Some people like to schedule by chapter; in a typical school year of 180 days, you would have just over 4 days per chapter if you did 5 days per week; just over 3 days if you did 4 days per week. Some chapters have more than one section, for a total of 94 sections. If you did one section per day, and added in 11 days to review, that would be 105 days.READ: Read about the Rosetta Stone. Here’s a little more in depth. Why is it important? Place a date on your timeline for when it was created and for when it was discovered. You can do mapwork showing where it was discovered. UNIT: The Phoenicians and the Beginnings of the Alphabet. Here is an interactive Phoenician alphabet. For younger students, oral review is sufficient. But to assess comprehension and retention for students in grades four and up, a book of tests (with answer keys) is available for each volume. The test books have a test for each chapter, and they include various types of questions: multiple-choice, matching, fill in the blank, and true-false. Tests for volumes two and above include some questions that require answers written in complete sentences, and the tests for the fourth volume add essay questions. Volume 1: Ancient Times You’re actually trying to teach the kids how to summarize and pull the important facts from the reading. And I like to know exactly what the kids learned.

LESSON PLAN: This is a good lesson plan and starting point for teaching about Persephone and Hades. Not only are these activities fun and not particularly hard for parents to set up, they also add a multisensory element to learning that can make learning history more engaging and meaningful to students, particularly with more tactile learners.
