The sleep mode offers a dB level of 65 meaning you shouldn’t be disturbed, and an adjustable thermostat can be adjusted between 17 – 35 degrees… giving you full control over temperature. The very catchy Chilly CLCO-290-09BS is a compact air conditioner with a punch. Only available with a BTU of 9,000, it’s more than enough for cool a medium sized room. It’s unfortunate this is the only BTU this model offers, it would have been nice to go up or down depending on what you’re using it for. If you’ve travelled to other warm countries, you will have become aware of the difference the air’s humidity makes. A dry heat is usually much easier to cope with. While the UK certainly isn’t tropical, there still remains a noticeable amount of moisture in the air. If you choose an air conditioner that includes a dehumidifier, it will keep you more comfortable during hot weather and also reduce the chance of damp or mould patches appearing in your home. In this test, I haven’t given any 10 out of 10 scores because I don’t want to give the impression that air coolers are perfect. In a heatwave, an air cooler will be just enough to make the difference between sleeping and not.

There’s some confusion, understandably. The popular Dyson cooler, for example, is not actually an air cooler, nor an air conditioner, but a fan. Big names like Mylek and ProBreeze all make air cons, fans and air coolers. So it’s important to know what you’re getting - and why. Having tried other air coolers I now realise it’s a bit of an outlier, with a more efficient motor enabling a greater airflow. The two parts of the evaporative cooler that require the most of your attention here are the honeycomb pads and the water tank, both of which need to be cleaned regularly.
