The user gains the Charging status condition until the end of next turn, causing the user's next Electric-type move to have its damage doubled. The status will wear off instantly after using a move, regardless of its type. From Explorers of Time and Darkness, Charge also raises the user's Sp. Defense by one stage. A jolt of electricity is hurled at the target to inflict damage. It may also leave the target with paralysis. If the user's next move is Electric-type, it will deal twice the usual amount of damage. If its next move is not Electric-type or a non-damaging move, the effect of Charge wears off without being used. A jolt of electricity crashes down on the target to inflict damage. This may also leave the target with paralysis.

If powered up by an Electrium Z into Z-Charge, the user's Special Defense is raised by another stage. The user boosts the power of the Electric move it uses on the next turn. This also raises the user's Sp. Def stat. This POKéMON has electricity-storing pouches on its cheeks. These appear to become electrically charged during the night while PIKACHU sleeps. It occasionally discharges electricity when it is dozy after waking up. Zapdos fires a bolt of electricity at the opponent from its body, or Zapdos releases a small beam of electricity from the point of one of its head feathers at the opponent.Magneton's body becomes surrounded in bright yellow electricity and it releases multiple small yellow bolts of lightning from its body at the opponent. Magnemite's body becomes surrounded by bright yellow electricity and it releases multiple yellow bolts of lightning from its body at the opponent; or, Magnemite charges bright yellow electricity at the ends of its magnets which it fires as two bolts that converge in front of it, from which a singular large bolt of bright yellow electricity is shot at the opponent. Pikachu's body glows yellow, then it releases a yellow lightning bolt from its body at the opponent, or Pikachu's cheeks glow yellow, then it releases multiple lightning bolts from its body at the opponent, or Pikachu releases a ball of electricity from its body at the opponent. Pikachu that can generate powerful electricity have cheek sacs that are extra soft and super stretchy.

Charge can also be used as part of a Super Contest combination, with Thunder Fang having more appeal points if used in the next turn. It is also part of a Contest Spectacular combination, causing a damaging Electric-type move (except Electroweb, Wild Charge and Zap Cannon) to give an extra three appeal points if used in the next turn.The user boosts the power of the Electric move it uses next.
