About this deal

Hurling ( Irish: iománaíocht, iomáint) is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ( camógaíocht), which shares a common Gaelic root. No more than in pool where they added spots and stripes to balls to make it easier for those with colour-blindedness to identify the balls.”

In 2015/16 the use of synthetic leather - known as G14 - took root abroad and this has had a significant impact on the basic nature of the sliotar, from an aerodynamic perspective and the distance that it is travelling. Watson, A. W. (May 1996). "Sports injuries in the game of hurling. A one-year prospective study". The American Journal of Sports Medicine. 24 (3): 323–328. doi: 10.1177/036354659602400313. ISSN 0363-5465. PMID 8734883. S2CID 25284709. Valerie Kennelly, an Optometrist who is a world leading authority on sports vision, pictured speaking during the 2014 GAA Coaching Development Conference. Allowing for a minimum of variation due to individual production, these specifications, calculated by a DCU testing team and based around averages of 15 manufacturers, were put in place to try and ensure a consistency in how sliotars perform. While many manufacturers had to make alterations to the design of their sliotar to adhere to the new regulations, it clearly resulted in greater consistency. The GAA designed a "stamp of approval" (by Avril Kennan) which manufacturers printed on their sliotars to indicate adherence to the regulations. The idea was that players and coaches would be able to ensure they were buying and using approved sliotars. The so-called ‘smart sliotar’ contains a numbered chip that allows it be scanned by match-officials before a game to verify it conforms to standards. It was intended to be introduced this year before the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted discussions around supply chains. Humphries, Tom. "Kilkenny Hurling". The Irish Times. Archived from the original on 24 October 2012 . Retrieved 20 February 2020. Strength and fitness of players, the increasing size of hurleys and tactical shifts have all been cited as factors, while the absence of crowds could also help to explain last weekend's particularly big totals. In speech, a score consisting of at least one goal and one point is read as simply the two numbers, so Tipperary's 2–13 is read "two thirteen"; the words "goals" and "points" invariably omitted. Goals are never "converted" into points; it is incorrect to describe a score of 2–13 as "nineteen". 2–0 would be referred to as "two goals", never "two zero". Likewise, 0–10 would be referred to as "ten points", never "zero ten". 0–0 is said "no score". So the Clare/Tipperary match score would be read as "Clare twenty points, Tipperary two thirteen".

Going more than four steps with the ball in the hand (it may be carried indefinitely on the hurley) Concerns that many of the sliotars coming from outside Ireland were not meeting the specifications set and bearing counterfeit stamps - not to mention suspicions they were being produced with child labour - have led the GAA to pursue a digital sliotar for games, which will only be produced by approved manufacturers. First Touch Soft Sliotars - They have a larger diameter and are ideal for beginners and kids. The manufacturing increases the cost, so it is one of the costly sliotars available in the market.John Allen: Sliotar dimensions much ado about nothing". irishtimes.com. Irish Times. 13 May 2016 . Retrieved 2 September 2019. In the early years of the GAA, there was no specific standard for the size or weight of sliotars. The man credited with initial standardisation of the sliotar is Ned Treston (1862–1949) of Gort, County Galway. He was selected to play in a match between South Galway and North Tipperary in February 1886 in Dublin. Prior the game, there was debate between the teams as regards the size of the sliotar. Treston made a sliotar at a nearby saddler, which was used in the game, and went on to be a prototype for subsequent sliotars. [8]
