Unlike basic straw and hay, alfalfa mulch starts out green. As these mulches break down they turn golden and provide a wealth of nutrients into the soil — especially nitrogen, which is an essential part of healthy garden soil. After all, alfalfa meal is used as a nitrogen supplement in organic fertilizers! Some shredded barks, such as cedar mulch, can also have a bonus skill: aromatic cedar can reduce the presence of some pests. But these bark mulches do tend to have lots of slivers, so wear gloves when working with them. It is likely that you’ll obtain straw that isn’t weed-free if buying it in a standard bale or bag. If you’re concerned about weed seeds in your mulch, search for a certified weed-free straw instead. Just like regular straw, these are cereal and grass crops that have been harvested, but these are steam-treated to remove weed seeds that make gardening laborious. This type of mulch is great for your garden or for composting. Avoid damaging roots of plants by hoeing weeds growing in mulches around permanentplants. Remove weeds by hand andadd a further layer of fresh mulch. There are a couple of downsides to alfalfa, however. Firstly, it’s expensive. Although organic materials like this are great for early root development, some of the nitrogen needed in the vegetable garden could evaporate into the air if it is not applied properly. But overall it’s a great garden Mulching covers the soil surface, and hence, it is helpful in maintaining the soil temperature which is beneficial for overall crop growth. Many studies demonstrated that the application of mulch could keep the soil cool during very hot climatic conditions (Kader et al. 2019; Long et al. 2001; Einert et al. 1975; Fraedrich and Ham 1982), while at normal/warm temperature in chilling days (Kudinov 1972; Kader et al. 2019). The temperature extremes affect the newly growing roots of plants adversely reducing the uptake of nutrients and water (Goulet 1995). The extreme temperature condition under early growth stages of plants may cause the plants to go under stress conditions as newly established roots are not able to uptake the proper amount of water and essential plant nutrients (Chalker-Scott 2007). Therefore, the judicious maintenance and regulation of soil temperature is a very critical factor for optimum plant growth. However, in hot and dry conditions such as in deserts, mulches decrease the temperature by 10 °C (barren soil) (Martin and Poultney 1992).Naklang K, Whitbread AM, Konboon Y, Suriya-Arunroj D, Blair GJ, Lefroy RDB (1999) The management of pre and post-legume crops, fertilizers and plant residues on rice yields and soil carbon in a flooded rice cropping system, pp. 51–57.
