About this deal

She leaved all the people that were fighting to get on the boat, and went for an unknown journey with only a compass. The themes it throws up link to a number of topics from rivers, oceans, humanity, and global warming.

I've given it three stars rather than two though because the author wasn't to blame for the publisher's failure, while the story displays clear potential. Many of your novels are inspired by history and by myth and legend - have these areas always been a fascination of yours since childhood and if so how did this passion come about? Global warming has caused the sea to rise until cities are turning into islands and civilization is crumbling. Put this together with the feral survival of the children on the Island of Eels and you have Floodland. So bleibt es eher auf dem Niveau von Büchern, die man 14-Jährige zwingt zu lesen, die somit an den Ernst der Welt denken sollen .

Although, the purpose of this was to read the book and create activities around it, I found that I was drawn into the book and constantly wanting to know what was going to happen next. In fact, I think I like the story-telling more this way than if another hundred or so pages of explanation and backstories had been added: the reader has to make some leaps along the way. If it was that tragedy brings out the worst in humans then it did a good job but it didn't go deep enough.Other notable award winning books include Floodland, Marcus’ first novel, which won the Branford-Boase Award in 2001, a prize for the best debut novel for children published in the UK each year; My Swordhand is Singing, which won the Booktrust Teenage Prize for 2007, and Lunatics and Luck, part of The Raven Mysteries series, which won a Blue Peter Book Award in 2011. This book was the winner of the Branford Boase Award 2001 and marked the start of author Marcus Sedgwick's multi-award-winning career. The characters fall a bit flat, the plot trundles on with a lack of genuine tension and then it finishes feeling slightly rushed and convenient. Zoe faces many challenges on her journey, particularly when stopping at a small "island" of an old cathedral that is overrun with wild children competing for space and resources. She is fortunate to uncover a small rowboat submerged in the mud, and fixes it up so she can escape her town and find her parents.

Even though it takes so many years for an island to completely sink, I noticed that if we don't have any interest on global warming, things will go much faster than we expected. Entirely deserving of the Branford Boase Award, Floodland is a stunning debut novel that precluded more literary brilliance to follow. Instead, she escapes with a boy named Munchkin, successfully goes to mainland, and meets her parents that she hadn't seen for a year. I read this over a weekend so I could use it as a stimulus for the English work the children in the year 6 class I was working with were going to do. the ending came with a large dose of skepticism on my part as it was unbelievable and unsatisfactory.I anticipated a more sadder ending, but, unfortunately I didn't get that😭But it's a good book overall especially for children to understand climate change and that. Well, if the country got smaller when the sea rose, then there ought to be more people squashed into what's left. Despite its bleakness the story itself is very good and has a very believable plot it’s just that Zoe is all over the place as far as her character goes and on top of that it seems like the story starts and ends in the middle.
