Has anyone else experienced issues like this? Obviously the easiest fix would be to enable wind reduction on the GoPro audio but I'm really trying to avoid this where possible. One of the main other accessories I’d add to any setup would be the Floaty Handle, which allows you to safely make use of the waterproof GoPro setup – something that is a huge advantage over traditional SLR and mirrorless setups. Sure the 360 filming is handy and opens up some really creative options to play with and Hero mode (where it shoots like a normal GoPro, through only one lens) is the most stable filming on any GoPro – but it is limited to 1080 which is a bit of a confusing move by GoPro and a deal breaker for a lot of vloggers. Next to that is the micro-HDMI port as well as the 3.5mm audio port. We’ll get into those in just a moment. Microphone & Audio Modes:

Now the GoPro range have never been known for their epic audio quality – and although the Hero 7 upped the game and the Hero 8 built on this even more, for serious creators audio was still a huge barrier for using a GoPro for vlogging, especially over the likes of the Canon G7 X or Sony A6400with their option for external mics and flip up screens. Once you unplug the Media Mod, the normal preset settings return to whatever you had them set prior to plugging in the media mod. So you can see that here: The first GoPro to introduce Hypersmooth stabilisation, this is the GoPro that really upped the game and where a GoPro vlog setup really came into consideration. Another awesome feature is the Horizon Levelling mode (borrowed from the GoPro MAX) which makes for super steady footage.

I watched your video on YT and tried to decipher your streaming discussion here, but I’m still confused by the ambiguous references to the audio delay (CONFUSING TEXT IN CAPS BELOW). You say: Note that these max resolutions don’t impact recording however, so you can actually still record at 4K even when outputting at 1080p. For example, you can see that here where I’m showing the clip properties and you can see the TV is showing what the GoPro is showing live, while recording. You can see the cable going to the TV from the GoPro I’m holding. I know, that’s confusing. Sorry. For example, the GoPro Light Mod being one ( full standalone review on that here), but also secondary microphones or anything else with a cold-shoe mount design (which is a lot of stuff). The GoPro Media Mod is a mixed bag, and your opinion of the accessory will largely depend on what you intend to use it for. If your desires center entirely around the 3.5mm input, then you’ll likely be quite pleased with the more streamlined option compared to the clunky adapter GoPro has previously had for years. Especially with the cold-shoe mounts. It works pretty darn well. This allows you to customize different presets with different Media Mod microphone settings. There are three shotgun mic settings:

So now with the GoPro Hero 9 I have approached it the same way, with adhesive dead cats on the top and front microphone. Initial results are pretty poor to say the least.

What are the Three Types of Wind Muffs?

In my case I used it both with the Light Mod, but also some microphones as I’ll show below in the next section. For these scenarios, there’s no more perfect ‘Run and Gun’ setup in terms of knowing my image quality will be spot-on and also knowing the GoPro app has the efficiency behind it to get my video files in full resolution off the camera (with mic-audio on it already) and into mobile editing workflow. Sure, the entire Media Mod may be a mixed bag, but the parts I need specifically actually fit my specific needs. The parts that mostly underperform, I wouldn’t have used much anyway. It also upgraded to the GP2 processor, which has significantly improved the overall speed and handling of the camera too.

Although not as common as the shotgun mics, lavalier mics can be a great option for travel vloggers as they are attached to the lapel of your shirt (or even under your clothing if you dont want it to be seen) allowing for clear commentary even in amongst a lot of hustle and bustle. Except... I am now asking questions about the wind noise and how to minimise it. Previously I had been running the GoPro Hero 7, on a chest mounted gimbal with small adhesive dead cats covering the microphones. I had disabled wind reduction to avoid the muffled sounding audio and that was working great. This basically takes Hypersmooth to the next level and gives almost gimbal quality stabilisation to you shots – so it’s well worth the invesment if you’re serious about vlogging with your GoPro. Oh and it’ll only fit the Hero 8 – if you opt to upgrade for the Hero 9 or 10 you’ll need to buy the dedicated Hero 9/10 Media Mod!Even though the fact the Media Mod had its own set of inbuilt mics, the thing that a lot of vloggers focused in on was that the Media Mod allowed a clean and contained solution for attaching external microphones – which opened up a whole range of options. And last but not least, you can charge the entire setup (meaning, your GoPro) using the USB-C port on the outside. This is one major benefit to the Media Mod design, is that it has an externally accessible USB-C port for constant power-on charging if you want it: Of course you dont have to jump in right away and splurge on these – you can always see how you get on with the standard GoPro audio before investing in the Media Mod and an additional external microphone setup. Monitor: This allows you to see what your GoPro is seeing in real-time, but with camera info overlaid atop it (so menus and such). This is a max of 1440p for 4:3 content, and 1080p for 16:9 content.

For those new to travel vlogging (and presumably video editing) the 360 stuff can be confusing to work your head around editing wise, so you’d be better off with the standard Hero 9.I suspect the reason for the vast majority of people buying the Media Mod is for the 3.5mm mic port. Or at least the internet would say so (and I’d believe them). However, we’ll start with the onboard shotgun mic. But we’ll be brief, because…umm…it’s not awesome. There are a few decent options out there but still not ideal as they were pretty clunky – but they did sow the seeds for the Media Mod. One of the new advantages of this is the MAX Media Mod – which allows you to have a 155 degree field of vision, similar to that of the MAX, which is perfect for talking to camera pieces and vlogging. Obviously the proof in how good a GoPro For Vlogging really is are the real life examples of videos created by everyone with them. In my case the Rode Wireless Go is a powered mic, so I selected that from the menu. Also, I can control the output on the Rode itself, so I didn’t choose the Mic+ option, otherwise that would have likely been too much volume. However, if you need that, the ‘Mic+’ option for either powered or unpowered would have bumped it up by 20dB.
