Description

Stereoscopic pictures are so much more evocative than “normal” ones and this book became a fantastic opportunity to show this off. It is not just a collection of photographs of nature, people, pets, architecture, and more, but a tangible, dimensional assemblage that speaks to the evocative power of stereoscopic photography.

I hate seeing inaccuracies in stereo photography books, where some of the pictures are the wrong way round or give you headaches. Brian May invited photographers from all round the world to submit 3-D photos capturing how they felt during lockdown. In the old days you used to get a toy in a cereal packet and for a long time in Weetabix you would get a little card with two pictures that looked the same. In the 1960s, he came across a Diablerie, a type of French stereoscopic card from the mid-19th century whose image is from a diorama depicting a unique vision of hell rendered in a Victorian context, evoking both spookiness and humor. Stereoscopy seems to be popular in Japan, certainly in my sphere of influence, and there are some great photographers with whom I communicate with directly.

When Brian May revived the London Stereoscopic Company, he projected this specialised form of photography into the 21st Century. In Brian May’s own words, and over 300 previously unseen 3-D photographs, this book is a series of glimpses of life with the rock band Queen, seen from the inside for the first time.As regular readers will know, Brian May is a passionate evangelist for stereoscopic photography, and has been since Queen broke through in the 1970s. Stereoscopy: the Dawn of 3D, written by the art historian Denis Pellerin, contains images from May’s collection of about 100,000 photographs – including two previously unseen images of Charles Dickens – and comes with its own foldable viewer. As for May, his musical solo efforts are concentrated on working with British singer Kerry Ellis, who had appeared in the "We Will Rock You" musical.

OR pick up a copy from London’s Proud Galleries and explore the magic of the Stereoscopy Is Good For You exhibition whilst you’re there…. And there's also the upcoming movie planned on the life of Mercury, which at one point had cast Sacha Baron Cohen as the lead before he left the project. Here we reveal for the first time the front cover, the beautiful image taken by the very talented Jane Sabini.

You see in a different way, as you need to imagine that you can see depth as well as everything else. For this book, we put out an invitation to this global community to send us their stereoscopic memories of life during the Covid Years.

But the presentation also includes a dazzling array of historical images communicating the excitement of Stereoscopy in Victorian times, and a selection of Brian May’s own stereoscopic work depicting QUEEN from the inside, as well as his own history in stereoscopy. The book also comes with a stereoscope that May himself designed so the reader can place it on the page and see the Diablerie images come to life in 3D. For the next 5 months, the exhibition will offer visitors the chance to experience 3-D first-hand, using May’s patent OWL viewers, in three areas channeling the new SIGFY book, the Birth of Stereoscopy, and QUEEN in 3-D.

The response was overwhelming, and as Covid continued to take its toll on the world, the fast-growing stereo community kept on snapping away, spreading beauty and hope through the uniquely powerful 3-D photographic medium. The result is an extraordinary outpouring of emotion and creativity featuring Nature, their pets, architecture, people and much more. I've been working on magazines since 1995 and am also a keen travel and portrait photographer when time allows, reaching the finals of the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year contest in 2015 and achieving my Licentiate from the Royal Photographic Society the year before. The images, from Brian’s personal archives, were taken using the various stereo cameras which Brian carried throughout his life.
