Key specs – CADR: 240m³/h; Max room size: 20m²; Power settings: 4; Dimensions (WDH): 51 x 19 x 53cm; Weight: 5.9kg; Filter replacement indicator: Yes; Warranty: 1 year What is generally present in smoke are carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide volatile organic compounds (itself a category), carbon, ash and soot – particles which can damage the airways and lungs.

This is one of those rare dual-function appliances that’s effective at both, and if the only downside is that it’s a bit weird looking, then that’s not exactly hard to live with. Throw in smart features, a good remote, and fairly frugal power consumption, and it’s a great addition to your living room or bedroom. At first, I was disappointed to see that our air quality is mostly very good. The levels remained consistently green and there weren’t many occasions when the device was triggered and activated. Can air purifiers remove dust? Smoke is generally harmful to inhale and can lead to coughing and wheezing in the short term and chronic problems with over exposure – this is certainly true of second-hand cigarette smoke.A Hoover Air Purifier pulls in the ambient air and traps small particles within its three filters before blowing out purified air. Although it’s hard to manage pollen outdoors without covering up or avoiding it completely, indoor pollen can be another story and more manageable with our range of air purifiers. How can an Air Purifier help with pollen? What we really like about this purifier, however, is that it’s both effective and pretty quiet about it. At full tilt, it’s as noisy as most rival air purifiers, but in its sleep mode you’d struggle to hear it above ambient sound levels – we measured the output at just 31dBA. In our deodorant spray test, the H-Purifier 500 got the PM2.5 concentration down to safe levels within two minutes and eight seconds, and Hoover’s three-filter purification system has been approved by the Allergy UK charity. We’re not 100% sure about the option to add essential oils to the airflow, but the options include an H-Biotics bottle that adds probiotic “good” bacteria to the atmosphere. All in all, it’s a superior purifier that’s perfect for mid-sized and larger rooms, with a price tag that won’t leave you gasping. Suitable for Room Size Up to 50 m²】 The effective purifier area of Core 300S can meet the needs of most families. Purify twice in one hour, and the purification area can reach 50m²/538 ft² each time. 360°air intake design, all-around air purification. It's perfect for bedrooms, living rooms, and offices

There’s a Max setting if you want to have an extra bit of oomph going on with your purifying sessions. More usefully, there’s a Sleep mode too, which is all well and good although curiously Hoover hasn't incorporated a middle-ground setting, but that's probably because the Auto option does such a good job of keeping performance just about right on the money. Inside a Hoover air purifier is a HEPA (H13) filter as part of the H-TRIFILTER system, which traps particles up to 0.3 microns in size (for scale, the human eye can only see 25-micron particles). Wi– The HEPA filter traps the harmful particles whilst the active carbon filter traps odours. Perfect for filtering out smoke and cleaning the air in your home. At just 18dB on its lowest setting, the Blue 3210 is technically quieter than a whisper. It’s certainly the quietest we tested as well as one of the most efficient, using about as much energy as an LED lightbulb. You’re more likely to know Acer for its PCs, laptops or monitors, but its foray into air purifiers shows a lot of promise. The Pro P2 is a mid-sized tower – just under 58cm tall – with the top accommodating the fan’s grille, the minimal controls, and a 1.5in square OLED colour screen. The latter gives you the current PM2.5 reading, plus an at-a-glance air quality indicator, with the text turning from green through amber to magenta as it worsens. Matt Thomas, Lead Small Electricals Buyer at John Lewis, has noted a marked increase in air purifier sales. “Typically, we’ve seen families with young children, new parents and families where there’s a history of allergies or respiratory conditions being the early adopters,” he says. The first thing you notice is that the multi-award winning briiv is unlike anything else in the air purifier market. With it’s Scandi-looks and natural filters, it looks like miniature greenhouse. But it could just be the future of indoor air purification. The H-PURIFIER range of air purifiers have a uniquely treated HEPA (H13) filter which not only captures the pollens but actively neutralises them*, making them harmless to allergy sufferers and preventing the allergic reaction (allergic rhinitis).

Second hand smoke can linger in the air until it blows away or is inhaled, however third hand smoke is also a danger when it has settled on surfaces. These materials are no safer once they are out of the air and can still be inhaled when they are disturbed or when laying on the surface, such as a cushions, clothing or bed sheets. This is evidenced by clothes which have a cigarette smell long after it has been extinguished. It’s really designed for small spaces of around 10m², but we found its performance better than the 80m³/h CADR might imply. Spraying antiperspirant into a small room with the purifier at maximum speed, the Clean Air Compact brought PM2.5 particulates down to safe levels within three minutes and six seconds. At that speed it’s fairly noisy, with sound levels reaching around 48dBA, but in general use the lowest setting will be fine, and this takes the noise levels down to 36.2dBA, where the sound is noticeable but hardly aggravating. It was easy to unbox and set up. It was already fully assembled and after plugging it in, it simply required the humidifier water tank to be filled and the diffuser bottle to be inserted. The LED light ring on the appliance cycled through red, orange, yellow and green as it assessed the air quality and finally settled on green. It was reassuring to know that the air quality was still good in our home. (We’d previously had a professional indoor air quality test conducted). WiFi enabled air purifier The Hoover Air Purifier 700 also has a diffuser function that releases different fragrances or probiotics into the air. It came with two options, the first of which was Detox Ritual, a H-ESSENCE essential oil. The second was H-BIOTICS, a natural blend of probiotics that can be diffused into the air to create more hygienic surfaces, and inhibit the proliferation of harmful microorganisms such as microbes and bacteria. Can air purifiers remove smells? An air purifier works best when it is on all-day long in pollen mode. However, the air purifier will have to work harder if new pollen is being brought into the house constantly. Therefore, to make best use of your new air purifier follow these tips: The CADR rate measures how much air is filtered in cubic metres per hour (m 3ph) of clean, purified air produced. The higher the CADR rating, the cleaner the air in the room will become. As a rule, if the square root of the CADR rating matches the floor area of the room – eg 625m 3ph in a 25m 2 room – it is an excellent air purifier. Three-quarters is good and half is acceptable. You may see CADR measured in cubic feet per hour on American devices, but the maths is the same.
